El Centro Comunitario Hispano-Americano of Transylvania County (CCHA) is a Latino-led non-profit organization that serves the Hispanic community. Their purpose is to create a bridge between the Spanish and English speaking people in a community in which justice and equality are highly valued.
Grant funding will offer supplemental support for El Centro’s primary educational program, Homework Club, this year. Funds from Lake Toxaway Charities will allow for the purchase of new books, help cover the cost of the labor to operate the
program, and support El Centro in improving the quality of the program.
Hosting Homework Club in person has already helped students bounce back from their learning gaps brought on by Virtual Learning in 2020-2021, as many El Centro
students have received improving marks on their report cards. The program is vital to ensuring these children refine their English Language skills and understanding, so that they may pursue higher academic goals as they grow.
El Centro also works closely with SAFE, Inc to bring in preventative training and fill Social Emotional Learning gaps with tutors and students, helping develop resiliency in their students. Homework Club distributes meal kits supplied by other area non-profit Bread of Life and the Hunger Coalition. Both Bread of Life and the Hunger Coalition are recipients of grant funding from Lake Toxaway Charities.
