Centro Comunitario Hispano-Americano, known as El Centro, exists to support Hispanic families in Transylvania County by removing the language, educational, and cultural barriers that limit access to opportunity. Through bilingual, culturally responsive programming, El Centro serves youth and families in a trusted environment — meeting them where they are and helping them build the skills and confidence to thrive.
El Centro’s programs touch every stage of family life. For school-age children, Homework Club and Bilingual Club provide academic support and help students strengthen both their English and Spanish language skills. Club Acción engages high school students in leadership development and exposure to college and career pathways. For adults, ESL classes help parents become more confident in supporting their children’s education and navigating daily life. Monthly Mental Health Family Nights — serving around 30 participants — offer access to wellness resources in a safe and culturally familiar space. And through its summer camp program, El Centro helps more than 50 students each year experience the outdoors, build friendships, and grow beyond the classroom.
El Centro also partners with a wide network of organizations across the county — including NC 4-H, TC Strong, the Boys & Girls Club, Mtn. Roots, and The Family Place — to expand its reach and deepen its impact, particularly in rural communities like Rosman. Cultural programming, including its growing Folkloric Dance & Family Engagement Program, rounds out an approach that honors the whole child and the whole family.
