Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina (BBBSWNC) creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Through carefully matched relationships between young people and caring adult or high school mentors, BBBSWNC provides the consistent guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling that helps children build confidence, strengthen academic engagement, and develop a broader vision for their future. Every match is professionally supported by trained staff — making mentoring a sustained, thoughtful investment in a child’s growth rather than a one-time experience.
In Transylvania County, where nearly half of children live in economically disadvantaged households and many youth face limited access to enrichment opportunities, BBBSWNC currently serves 28 young people and is working to expand its reach in the years ahead.
Lake Toxaway Charities is proud to support BBBSWNC’s programming in Transylvania County, which pairs the ongoing mentoring relationship with structured group enrichment activities designed to build life skills and resilience. Grant funding will support experiences ranging from hands-on gardening and nutrition education to outdoor adventures, a youth financial literacy workshop offered in partnership with First Citizens Bank, and community events that strengthen peer connections and school engagement. Together, these activities complement the one-to-one mentoring at the heart of BBBSWNC’s mission — giving Transylvania County youth more opportunities to grow, connect, and thrive.

As a “Big”, you’ll be matched with a child (ages 6-16) who’s waiting for a positive role model like you. Whether it’s sharing a hobby, exploring the outdoors, or offering support, your time can create a ripple effect that lasts a lifetime.
How does it work?

- We’ll match you with a Little based on your interests.
- Spend 2-3 hours together twice a month – it’s that easy!
You don’t need to be a superhero – just someone who cares. We provide all the training and support you need to succeed. Currently we have a waiting list of 20 youth looking for their BIG.
