Blue Ridge Community Health Services is a nonprofit, federally qualified health center, providing quality healthcare, including dental and mental, accessible and affordable for all. In 2020, Lake Toxaway Charities approved a grant to make a single payment on a loan so Blue Ridge Community Health Services could continue its efforts.
In October of 2012, BRH opened a site in Transylvania County located on Hospital Drive in Brevard. BRH-Transylvania has steadily grown to serve as the medical home for more than 11,000 unique patients over this 11 year period. Of those patients served, over half were uninsured or underinsured. As Transylvania County’s largest nonprofit healthcare provider and now comfortably settled in the new clinical space at 29 French Broad Avenue, BRH is finding that several pieces of equipment that transitioned from the former space to the much larger and busier location are not able to keep up with the patient demand. Specifically the one and only mobile vital signs monitor is 9 years old. Lake Toxaway Charities approved a grant request in 2021 to purchase two (2) additional mobile vital sign monitors. In the current location these monitors will travel between 11 medical and dental exam room plus have the range and capability to move to the parking area for often needed car side visits. The purchase of two NEW vital sign monitors (affectionately referred to as “A Nurse on a Stick”) will offer an easy-to read vivid touchscreen and will provide blood pressure readings and averaging, respiration rate, oxygen saturation and temperature.
In addition, Lake Toxaway Charities approved a grant in 2021 to “Feed the Heroes”. BRH has been providing Drive-Thru Vaccine Clinics in all 8 counties they serve. In Transylvania County these drive-thru events have been held at the Brevard Music Center. A typical mass vaccine clinic requires a large group of staff, which are pulled from multiple sites across our service area. Staff and volunteers register, screen, vaccinate and medically monitor between 300 and 500 patients at each event. In order to do this as efficiently as possible, providing lunch, on site, for the staff and volunteers allows for rotation of lunch breaks, eliminating the need to stop appointments during lunch thus allowing 72 additional patients to be vaccinated during the event.
Lake Toxaway Charities is proud to support the efforts to provide health care to our less fortunate neighbors in Transylvania County.
