WNC Firewood

WNC FireWood addresses a critical but often overlooked need in Transylvania County: safe, adequate home heating for low-income and elderly residents who rely on firewood to stay warm through the winter months. Cold homes contribute to respiratory illness, depression, falls, and financial stress — conditions that fall hardest on older adults and families with limited resources. By providing free firewood to those in need, WNC FireWood helps stabilize home environments and supports the broader health and wellbeing of the community it serves. To their knowledge, no other firewood ministry exists in the county, and demand for their services extends well beyond Transylvania County lines.

WNC FireWood has operated for more than ten years, and through the generosity of a local Rosman family, the ministry is now relocating to a larger farm property off Hannah Ford Road — a move that will improve access, enhance safety, and create room for future growth.

Lake Toxaway Charities is proud to support WNC FireWood’s relocation and expansion of their firewood production woodlot. Grant funding will help cover essential site development costs, including infrastructure improvements and the transfer of their existing firewood supply to the new location. With significant in-kind labor provided by dedicated volunteers, this project reflects the deep community commitment that has defined WNC FireWood’s ministry from the start.
