NC MedAssist is a non-profit pharmacy program that provides access to lifesaving medications, patient support, advocacy, and related services to vulnerable and uninsured North Carolina residents. Through a grant from Lake Toxaway Charities, Med-Assist will provide free medications for our neighbors in need.
In 2020 NC MedAssist received funding from Lake Toxaway Charities to host a mobile pharmacy event, as well as to provide free pharmacy services to Transylvania County patients. Unfortunately, the mobile pharmacy event had to be canceled due to the state mandated stay-at-home order; however, Lake Toxaway Charities approved a reallocation of funding to their free pharmacy program.
With funding from Lake Toxaway Charities, MedAssist was able to serve 111 patients in Transylvania County and dispensed 1,486 prescriptions with a value of more than a half of a million dollars ($579,141) through our free pharmacy program. Data from MedAssist’s patient surveys showed a 45.4% increase in better health since becoming a patient of NC MedAssist. Additionally, 71.6% of patients reported no overnight hospital stays in the past 12 months.
The 2021 grant from Lake Toxaway Charities will support the free pharmacy program and the mobile pharmacy event.

As you may know 85% of our patients are on a medication for a chronic illness and 42% are on behavioral health meds.
