Sharing House – Transylvania Christian Ministry

Sharing House is a source of compassion and crisis assistance for our low-income neighbors in Transylvania County, where we offer food and fresh produce, gently-used clothes, rent and utility assistance, household goods, camping equipment, hot showers, a safe place to share stories of struggle and a refuge of social interaction.  They also empower people who seek paths to self-reliance, through special programs such as “Wheels to Work” and the Bridges Out of Poverty mentoring class called “Getting Ahead”.

In late summer 2020, Sharing House developed a partnership with a fellow community non-profit, Neighbors in Ministry (Rise and Shine), to distribute boxes of healthy produce to our neighbors in the historic Rosenwald community of Brevard. Currently, the project distributes up to 200 boxes of fresh produce per week using both locations. This collaborative effort has focused on increasing access and availability to a variety of high quality fruits and vegetables, and importantly, has provided a vehicle for breaking down cultural barriers, and building trusted relationships with underserved and marginalized members of our community.

Lake Toxaway Charities approved an operational grant in 2020 to establish a designated discretionary Emergency Healthy and Wellness fund to provide crisis financial assistance for prescription drug costs to low income families. In addition to this operational grant, Lake Toxaway Charities also extended a COVID emergency relief grant in 2020 to offer immediate aid to our neighbors in Transylvania County.

In 2021 Lake Toxaway Charities approved a grant to support the Sharing House’s successful collaboration with Rise and Shine as Lake Toxaway Charities and our supported non-profits continue to address food security needs which have been exacerbated by the prolonged Covid crisis.
