Pisgah Legal Services (PLS) is a community-based nonprofit that pursues justice by providing free civil legal aid and advocacy to help low-income people in Western North Carolina meet their basic needs and improve their lives. Most of PLS’s clients live at or below 125% of the federal poverty line (or $27,450 annually for a family of three) and often have multiple problems due to poverty. 2020 was a record -breaking year for Pisgah Legal Services. Pisgah Legal Services helped over 20,000 low-income people, including more than 7,000 children, to escape situations of abuse and neglect, avoid homelessness, access medical care, and meet other urgent needs. PLS clients are the most vulnerable members of our community, including disadvantaged children, victims of domestic violence and abuse, the elderly, people with disabilities, homeless veterans, and the working poor. Now in their 43rd year, PLS has demonstrated decades of effective management and leadership, excellent stewardship of charitable contributions, and financial stability.
Lake Toxaway Charities awarded a grants in 2020, 2021, and 2022 to aid in this important initiative. The grant will fund continued free legal advice and representation to low income Transylvania Country residents.
