The Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) is a nonprofit organization committed to creating safe and affordable housing for people of limited income across Henderson, Transylvania, and Polk Counties. Founded in 1988 from a church-led volunteer home repair team, HAC has grown into a comprehensive housing services organization — building new single-family homes and multi-family apartments, performing essential home repairs, and providing housing counseling for families working toward homeownership. HAC’s approach recognizes that the housing crisis cannot be solved by any single solution, and their broad range of services reflects the diverse needs of the communities they serve.
The need for affordable housing in Transylvania County is acute. With one of the highest median home sale prices in the region and nearly half of all renters spending more than 30% of their income on housing, families face mounting instability that affects their health, employment, and ability to stay rooted in the community.
Lake Toxaway Charities is proud to support HAC’s Cashiers Valley Road project — HAC’s first single-family housing development in Transylvania County. Located within the historic Rosenwald community in Brevard, the development will ultimately include single-family homes and townhomes built to serve working families. Grant funding will support early design and permitting work, helping lay the groundwork for a project that will expand homeownership opportunities and build generational wealth for Transylvania County residents for years to come.
